NAEP-SC is excited to introduce our next Explore-SC Series event at the Hagood Mill Historic Site.
Hagood Mill Historic Site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognized for its historical significance as one of the oldest surviving gristmills in South Carolina.
Come join us on a guided tour of Hagood Mill and surrounding areas in the upstate! We will start the tour at Hagood Mill to see the key sites, including petroglyphs and the Grist Mill. We will then eat lunch on site (bring lunch or plan to pick up before arriving). After lunch, we will visit the Oolenoy Baptist Church cemetery, approximately 10 miles away. Those buried at the cemetery include Cherokee Indians (who were there first), early settlers, Revolutionary War veterans, and Confederate veterans. They have some of the most interesting graves in the state. Some have a collection of stones like the old Scottish cairns. Others have peaked stone slabs that look like the roofs on houses. Many of the graves included inscriptions or additional monuments noting Revolutionary War or Civil War service.
Then we will head to Soapstone Baptist Church founded by ex-slaves who settled here after the Civil War. They persevered in their community named Liberia, in spite of racial threats from the KKK during the Reconstruction after the Civil War. It has the prettiest view of Table Rock Mountain to be found.
This event is free. Family and friends are welcome! Tour sizes will be limited, so please register by September 21 so we can provide a head count.
Please bring lunch, a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, and bug spray.
